...The catalogue...explores the resonances between Monet's late works (1914-1926), which anticipated the beginnings of abstract art, and the paintings of Mitchell (1925-1992). An American painter with a background in Abstract Expressionism, Mitchell traveled to France as early 1948 and settled in Vétheuil in 1968, an inspiring location where Monet had also lived from 1878 to 1881. The masterpieces and sketches gathered here highlight the similarities regarding color, light, technique, nature, and the landscapes of Giverny and Vétheuil, wich had a profound influence on both artists.
